Lock Rekeying
$125+ | 20-40 minutes per lock | Available 24/7
Lock rekeying costs $125 for the service call plus first lock, then $45 for each additional standard lock. We change the internal pins so old keys stop working. Same lock body, new keys. Takes 20-40 minutes per lock.
What Is Lock Rekeying and How Does It Work?
Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration of your existing lock so old keys no longer work. We don't replace the lock itself. We pull the cylinder, swap the pins to a new pattern, and cut fresh keys that match.
Think of it like changing the password on your lock. The hardware stays, the access changes. It's faster and cheaper than replacing the entire lock, and it works on any standard pin tumbler cylinder.
How Much Does It Cost to Rekey a House?
$125 covers the service call and your first lock. Each additional standard lock is $45. A typical 4-lock house (front door, back door, garage entry, side door) runs about $260. High-security locks like Medeco cost more due to specialized pins.
According to HomeAdvisor's 2025 cost data, the national average for rekeying is $40-$100 per lock. Our pricing includes the service call, which many locksmiths charge separately.
When Should You Rekey vs Replace Your Locks?
Rekey if the hardware is solid. Replace if it's worn out. Just moved into a new home? Rekeying is almost always the right call. The previous owner, their realtor, their dog walker, and who knows who else has copies of your keys.
But if your locks are rusted, loose, or builder-grade hardware that's 15 years old, replacing makes more sense. We'll give you an honest recommendation when we see what you have.
Can You Rekey All My Locks to One Key?
Yes. That's called keying alike and we do it all the time. We repin every lock in your house to the same key pattern. One key opens every door. It's included in the standard rekeying price at no extra charge.
Most homeowners love this. Instead of carrying 4 different keys for 4 different doors, you carry one.
Common Questions
How long does rekeying take?
About 20-40 minutes per lock for standard pin tumblers. A full house with 4-5 locks usually takes about an hour and a half. High-security locks take a bit longer.
Do you rekey smart locks?
Depends on the model. Some smart locks like Schlage Encode have a physical cylinder that can be rekeyed. Others are fully electronic with no traditional keyway. We'll let you know what's possible with your specific lock.
Should I rekey after buying a new house?
Absolutely. You have no idea how many key copies exist from previous owners, realtors, contractors, pet sitters, and neighbors. Rekeying is cheap insurance.
Can you rekey a lock if I lost all the keys?
Yes. We don't need an existing key to rekey. We'll pick or bypass the lock to remove the cylinder, then repin it. Same result, just takes a few extra minutes.
Is rekeying as secure as replacing the lock?
For access control, yes. Rekeying makes old keys completely useless. The only reason to replace instead is if you want a higher security grade or the physical hardware is damaged.
Do you carry pin kits for all lock brands?
We carry pins for Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Baldwin, Emtek, Medeco, and most other residential brands. If you have an unusual brand, call ahead and we'll confirm.
