High-Security Locks
$150 - $450 | 30-60 minutes | Available 24/7
High-security locks from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy are pick-proof, bump-proof, and drill-resistant. Installation runs $150-$450 depending on the brand and type. Keys can only be duplicated at authorized locations with your ID card.
What Makes a Lock 'High-Security'?
High-security locks use restricted keyways, anti-pick pins, and hardened materials that standard locks don't have. A regular Kwikset or Schlage can be picked by a hobbyist with $20 in tools from Amazon. A Medeco M3 or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ cannot.
The key difference (literally) is restricted key control. Standard keys can be copied at any hardware store. High-security keys require an authorization card and can only be duplicated at certified dealers. You control exactly who has a key.
Which High-Security Brand Is Best?
Medeco for most residential applications. Mul-T-Lock for the highest security. Abloy for corrosive environments. That's the quick version. Medeco's M3 and X4 cylinders use rotating pins that defeat conventional picking. Mul-T-Lock MT5+ uses telescoping pins with a sidebar mechanism. Both are UL437 rated.
In South Florida's salt air, Abloy Protec2 is worth considering. It uses a disc detainer mechanism instead of pins, so there's nothing to corrode. According to Abloy's spec sheet, the Protec2 is rated for 10 million cycles.
Who Should Consider High-Security Locks?
Anyone who needs key control or lives in a high-value home. If you're worried about unauthorized key copies, restricted keyways solve that. If you live in a gated community but want an extra layer, high-security hardware adds it.
Property managers use these too. Restricted keys mean tenants can't make copies at Home Depot. When they move out, you don't have to rekey if you got the keys back.
Common Questions
How much does a Medeco lock cost installed?
A Medeco M3 deadbolt runs $200-$300 installed. The Medeco Maxum (their top residential model) is $300-$450. These prices include the lock, installation, and your first set of restricted keys.
Can a locksmith pick a high-security lock?
Theoretically, with specialized tools and a lot of time, some can be manipulated. In practice, no one is picking a Medeco M3 or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ during a break-in. These locks are designed to resist attack for 15+ minutes under lab conditions.
Where do I get copies of restricted keys?
Only at authorized Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, or Abloy dealers. You'll need your key card (we give you one at installation). We're an authorized dealer for all three brands, so you can get copies from us.
Do high-security locks fit standard doors?
Yes. They use standard bore hole sizes. We remove your existing cylinder and install the high-security one in the same hole. No drilling or door modification needed.
Are high-security locks worth it for a regular house?
If you live in an area with any property crime, yes. The lock hardware costs $150-$400 more than a standard deadbolt, but a single break-in costs thousands in damage, stolen property, and insurance deductibles.
