When Is a Panic Bar Required by Code?
Any door serving an occupant load of 50 or more people in Florida. That includes most retail stores, restaurants, offices, assembly halls, and educational buildings. The Florida Building Code follows IBC Section 1010.1.10 which mandates panic hardware on these exits.
Even if your occupancy is below 50, the fire marshal may require panic bars on certain doors based on the building's use and layout. We install them to meet all applicable codes and can advise whether your doors need them.

How much does a new panic bar cost installed?
Von Duprin 99: $350-$450. Von Duprin 98 (rim exit): $250-$350. Detex 10 series: $300-$400. Includes hardware, installation, and testing.
Can you install a panic bar on a glass door?
On aluminum-frame glass doors, yes. We use rail-type exit devices designed for narrow stile doors. On frameless glass doors, it depends on the glass thickness and type.
Do you install panic bars with alarms?
Yes. Alarm exit devices (like Detex ECL-230D) sound an alarm when the bar is pushed. Common for emergency exits that shouldn't be used as regular entries. See our exit alarm installation page.
