What Is a Smart Key / Push-to-Start System?
A proximity key fob that communicates with the car wirelessly. You walk up to the car with the fob in your pocket. The car senses it and unlocks the doors. You get in, press the start button, and the engine fires. No inserting a key anywhere.
Smart keys use low-frequency radio (125 kHz for proximity detection) and high-frequency radio (315 or 433 MHz for remote lock/unlock). The car and fob exchange encrypted rolling codes. If the codes match, everything works. If the fob is missing or dead, the car won't start.
How Much Does Smart Key Replacement Cost?
$200-$300 for mainstream brands. $300-$450 for luxury brands. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia smart keys are on the lower end. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus are on the higher end because the fob hardware and programming are more involved.

Can you replace a smart key without going to the dealer?
Yes. That's our specialty. We carry smart key blanks for the most popular models and program them at your vehicle using OBD-II diagnostic tools. Same result as the dealer, less money, less hassle.
What if my smart key battery dies?
Every smart key has an emergency physical key blade hidden inside the fob. You can use it to manually unlock the door. To start the car, hold the dead fob against the start button. The car will detect it through NFC. Or just replace the battery for $10-$15.
Can you program a used smart key from another vehicle?
For many brands, yes. We erase the previous vehicle's data and register the fob to your car. The fob needs to be the correct part number for your year, make, and model.
How many smart keys can my car support?
Most vehicles support 4-8 registered smart keys. We can add your new key without deactivating existing ones, unless you specifically want to erase old keys.
Do you service Tesla key cards and phone keys?
We can program Tesla key cards. Phone-key setup goes through the Tesla app, which you handle yourself. We can assist with the initial pairing if needed.
